Get your walking shoes on and plan a day outdoors. Check out these five underrated Amarillo parks where you can take a deep breath, slow down, and just enjoy the walk.

1. Rock Island Rail Trail

  • Trail access across Amarillo, including near SE 3rd Ave

Have you ever experienced the Rock Island Rail Trail? You may not even have noticed it existed. That is ok. This hidden-in-plain-sight trail follows an old railroad corridor through neighborhoods and commercial zones. It's a pleasure for anyone who wants a quiet walk. There are sections of the trail that are surprisingly scenic and lightly trafficked, especially near Georgia Street. Along the way, you can find all kinds of wildflowers, local murals, and even the occasional roadrunner.

2. John Stiff Memorial Park

  • Bell St. & 48th Ave

Even though on weekends you can spot many sports and events, the southern and eastern parts of John Stiff Park are much more laid-back. There is a lot to offer at Southwest Park (yes, I still call it the original name). They have wide walking paths, small ponds, and large open spaces.  You will even start to feel like you are on a nature walk.  If you're looking for a quiet place to get steps in and soak up some sun, this one’s a win.

3. Wildcat Bluff Nature Center

  • 2301 N Soncy Rd

Technically, more of a nature preserve than a park, but one you will want to visit nonetheless. Wildcat Bluff is perfect for those who want a little adventure with their peace and quiet. You can check out native grassland trails, there are plenty of butterflies and birds, and gaze out at the beautiful Texas skies. You will also see plenty of wildflowers in the spring.

4. Southeast Park

  • Near SE 46th Ave

When was the last time you checked out Southeast Park?  This one somehow flies under the radar. It's a little out of sight, out of mind, but a beautiful park to visit. You can check out the water and walk the dock, or do some fishing from it. The park and walking trails are rarely crowded. Don't miss a sunset from the angle of this park.

5. Medical Center Park (Medi Park)

  • NW 9th Ave & Wallace Blvd

Medi Park (or as newly dubbed John Ward Memorial) is situated behind the medical district and near the Discovery Center. Medi Park can get busy, but it is still rather large that you can make your own place. It offers a surprisingly serene spot in the heart of the city. You can take a walk around the small lake and even feed the ducks, but watch out for the geese; they can get aggressive.  Whether you are taking a walk by yourself or giving Fido his exercise, you can enjoy nature without leaving Amarillo.
