Texas Cyclospora Outbreak Now Linked to More Than Just Produce

At this point, you have undoubtedly heard about the cyclospora outbreak that's been sweeping the nation and Texas. No, it's not COVID, and it's not killing people, but it is definitely causing some issues that aren't so fun.

Over 1,000 cases have been reported so far, and it's caused a lot of restaurants to start pulling items from their menus. A lot of the cases have been linked back to produce items, but there is something else that is now being linked to, and it's not fun.

What Is Cyclospora, What Does It Cause, and How To Prevent

Cyclospora is a parasite that can wreak havoc on your intestinal system. It's a microscopic parasite that can cause watery diarrhea, as well as some explosive bowel movements. While it typically isn't deadly, it can create some uncomfortable situations if not handled.

One way you can attempt to prevent it is to make sure you are washing produce very thoroughly. While there is no guarantee that it'll get rid of the parasite, it would give it the best chance to disappear.

What Else Can It Be Found In

This is the one thing we're starting to find out that isn't helping. The parasite can be found in water as well. So remember how I just mentioned washing your produce? Well, if your water is contaminated with it, the produce isn't exactly going to be washed of it.

Using a produce spray is something that would help avoid having to use the water, especially if there's a chance the water could be contaminated with it.

Restaurants Pulling Things From Menu

Because of the spread, some restaurants are beginning to pull menu items until they can be sure things are a bit safer. McDonald's has pulled salads from their menu after some of the cases were confirmed to come from them.

Taco Bell has mentioned pulling certain things as well, such as lettuce, which is a huge part of their menu items. It's all about keeping us safe, even if it means my tacos have to be without lettuce for the time being.
