The Heart O Texas Fair Brings Community Together In October
Before TikTok and Xbox claimed our leisure time there was one event happening every October in Central Texas. The Heart O’ Texas Fair and Rodeo was just about the only thing that brought everyone together. For a lot of people, it wasn’t just a fair. It was the biggest thing that happened all year.
Fair Food and First Dates
Nothing quite hit like funnel cake and the smell of smoked turkey legs along with the mix of livestock and country music in the air. Whether you were there with your family, youth group from church, or attempting to impress your crush by avoiding hurling while riding the Tilt-A-Whirl, the fair had something for everyone. The giant slide was a rite of passage, too, just like ruining your allowance trying to win a goldfish you would ultimately kill three days later.
The Rodeo Was a Big Deal
The rodeo was not just background noise. It was an event. Real cowboys came to show off from far-off places, and the grandstands would fill. Kids practically begged their parents for cowboy hats and boots just to fit in. For a lot of us, it was the first time we saw bull riding up close and the second time we questioned our life choices.
Concerts, Carnivals, and Community
The Heart O’ Texas Fair always delivered a full array of entertainment from top-tier country stars to local bands performing on the small stage. You didn’t just go to watch the fair; you went to participate. Your neighbors caught up. Families created memories together. Teenagers had their first impression of freedom walking the fairgrounds unchaperoned.
Of course, the fair is still an annual event, but it just doesn't feel the same as it used to back in the good ole' days. There was just something about walking those old dusty fairgrounds with a corn dog in each hand rather than an iPhone.
